Desirable Gold Curves
Discover a horological icon with this 1954 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bombé Ref. 6090, a stunning rarity in 18K yellow gold. The “Bombé” name derives from its signature lugs—curved and voluminous, inspired by the French word “bombé,” meaning “curved” or “bulging.” This distinctive design, paired with a smooth 33.5mm gold case, creates a bold yet elegant silhouette that sets it apart from flatter vintage models.
Driven by the esteemed chronometer Cal.645 18-jewel automatic movement. Per The Vintage Rolex Field Manual by Colin A. White, production of the Cal.645 began and ended in 1954, making this example a fleeting piece of Rolex history. The Super Oyster crown, being a scarce feature enhancing water resistance, was crafted in limited numbers from 1951-1953, adding to this Ref. 6090’s exclusivity.
While some Bombé watches appeared in 14K gold, the 18K gold version is rarer and more coveted for its richer tone and prestige. The restored white dial with red line detail, framed by gold Dauphine hands and pencil indices, exudes timeless refinement. This example is perfect for the collector who enjoys vintage refinement without the visible wear and tear. An incredible value for an 18K gold historic Rolex wrist watch.
